Greenfield brings the fair home

Greenfield Retirement Home in Princeton wasn't able to take its residents to the Bureau County Fair this year so it brought the fair to them.

Greenfield turned its driveway into its own little fair Wednesday morning, complete with clowns, games, music and fair food to entertain its residents in place of their annual trip to the Bureau County Fair, which was canceled this year due to the coronavirus.

"With COVID we’re not able to do our normal activities, and one of those activities was going to the fair and play Bingo and enjoy the fair," Greenfield Activities Director Christine Thompson said. "We tried to replicate that as well as we could here. We had to follow all the guidelines and restrictions that the Illinois Department of Health sends out.

"It was so much fun. It was a lot of work, but well worth it, because it’s all about the residents. They’re the ones who live here. It’s their home."

Margaret Gale, 85, a former Tiskilwa resident, was crowned as the Greenfield Fair Queen. She said she was humbled and honored to represent Greenfield, which she called her favorite place.

Greenfield Administrator Phil Kaufmann entertained the residents with a rendition of "Meet Me in St. Louis," the fabled tune for the 1904 World's Fair.

He was the warm-up act for Jack Ness of Sheffield who conducted a concert for the Greenfield residents. He regularly plays at the Bureau County Fair.

Later in the afternoon, the residents were tasted some good old fashioned fair food, including mini-corndogs, cotton candy and lemon shake-ups.

Kaufmann said it was a great day overall for the residents.

"It’s been a challenge for the activities department to program and I want to recognize Chris’ efforts to do unique programming and come up with ways that we can still maintain our social distancing and mask wearing and all that has to happen and create events for our residents," he said.
